Fillings

Dental fillings are one of the most common treatments used to restore a tooth that has been damaged, typically due to decay caused by dietary habits. The process involves removing the decayed part of the tooth and filling it with a restorative material.

Sometimes, you may notice dental decay as small black spots on the surface of your tooth, but it can also occur beneath the surface, making it invisible to the naked eye. In such cases, an X-ray is required to fully assess the health of the tooth.

After a thorough evaluation, your dentist will explain the extent of any decay and recommend the most suitable treatment. Small cavities can usually be treated with a filling, while larger areas of decay might need a more extensive treatment, such as an onlay or root canal.

If you’re prone to dental decay, we can guide you on improving your oral care routine at home and may suggest a professional cleaning with a dental hygienist for a deeper clean.

Amalgam Fillings vs. Composite Fillings

When choosing a filling, there are two main options: amalgam and composite.

  • Amalgam fillings are dark grey or silver and are known for their strength and durability. They were once the most commonly used type of filling due to their long-lasting nature.
  • Composite fillings are tooth-coloured, making them a more aesthetically pleasing option as they blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

The choice between amalgam and composite fillings often depends on factors such as aesthetic preference and budget. Amalgam fillings are generally less expensive, but if you’re concerned about how visible the filling will be, composite is a better choice.

Amalgam fillings are made from a mix of metals, including mercury. While they are considered completely safe by the NHS, some patients may still have concerns about the potential risks of mercury. Rest assured, we take all necessary precautions during the placement and removal of amalgam fillings to ensure your safety.

Composite fillings may not last as long as amalgam, especially in the back molars where there is more pressure from chewing. If the decay is located in a rear tooth, an amalgam filling may be preferred due to its durability, whereas composite is typically used for more visible areas, such as the front teeth.

Temporary Fillings

Temporary fillings are used to protect a tooth while awaiting further treatment, such as a dental crown. This is commonly part of a root canal procedure when a longer-term solution is needed.

How Much Do Fillings Cost?

Fillings are a highly affordable treatment, starting at just £150 per tooth. In addition to filling cavities, we can help you improve your oral health habits to reduce the risk of future decay.

It’s important to note that some people are naturally more prone to cavities due to microscopic grooves on the chewing surfaces of their teeth, which can make them more susceptible to decay.
