Root canal treatment is necessary when an infection reaches the root of your tooth, potentially leading to an abscess. Once the infection affects the tooth’s pulp (where the nerve is located), it can cause significant pain.

The procedure involves removing the infected tissue and nerve, providing relief from the pain. Using specialized tools, the dentist exposes the infected area, cleans out each root canal, and then fills and seals them. The tooth is then protected with a filling or crown.

Please note that the cost of the root canal treatment does not include the cost of a crown, which is placed afterward.

Does Root Canal Treatment Hurt?

Root canal treatment is often feared because of its reputation for being painful. This is typically due to the infection already being present, making it harder to numb the tooth completely.

However, with modern techniques and anaesthetics, we ensure the treatment is as comfortable as possible. While you might feel mild discomfort, you should not experience any pain. If you do, additional anaesthetic can be administered to ensure you’re fully comfortable.

How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

The time required for a root canal depends on the size of the tooth and the complexity of the root system. For example, back molars can have multiple, intricate roots that require more time to clean thoroughly.

A simple root canal might take as little as 20-30 minutes, while a more complex case may take around 1-2 hours. Before the procedure begins, we’ll inform you of the expected duration based on your specific situation.

Will I Need a Crown After Root Canal Treatment?

After a root canal, the tooth loses its blood supply, making it more fragile and prone to fracture. Additionally, the tooth may appear discoloured due to decay. To protect the tooth and restore its function, a crown is often recommended.

Crowns are typically made from porcelain and help restore the tooth’s structure, allowing you to eat and function normally. A crown can also address any discoloration caused by the infection. In some cases, a smaller restoration (called an onlay) may be sufficient, which is like a partial crown.

Please note that the cost of root canal treatment does not include the crown. A separate fee will apply for the crown placement.
